thrombocytopenia as a clinical manifestation of hepatitis c among patients with a positive anti-hcv test

چکیده
objectives the aim was to study the prevalence of thrombocytopenia in hcv patients without cirrhosis and splenomegaly. patients and methods a cross-sectional study was carried out in the gastrointestinal out patient department (g.i. opd) of the sindh institute of urology and transplantation (siut) from september-november 2013. 30 patients aged between 18 - 60 years with a positive anti-hcv result were included. patients with enlarged spleen, liver cirrhosis on an ultrasound of the abdomen, and thrombocytopenia related to other causes were excluded from the study. results a total of 30 patients satisfying the inclusion criteria were selected for study. the mean age of the patients was 42.2 ± 11.4 (16 - 60), and they included 21 females and 7 males. the majority of patients had normal liver function tests with normal spleen size. on the cbc, 13 had platelets of less than 150,000/µl and 17 patients had a platelet count in the normal range, i.e., 150,000 - 400,000/µl. the prevalence of thrombocytopenia was found to be 43.3% among those with hepatitis c. conclusions the conducted study showed moderate frequency of hepatitis c-induced thrombocytopenia in patients without hepatic fibrosis and splenomegaly among the pakistani population. background the hepatitis c virus (hcv) has been recognized as the cause of thrombocytopenia (defined as a platelet count of < 150,000 platelets/ul) occurring in patients with chronic hepatitis c. thrombocytopenia occurs in 64% - 76% of patients with cirrhosis and/or fibrosis, compared with 6% of non-cirrhotic patients with chronic liver disease.

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) specific immune responses in anti-HCV positive patients without hepatitis C viraemia.
BACKGROUND/AIMS Most patients infected with hepatitis C virus (HCV) develop chronic infection and persistent viraemia. The immune mechanisms responsible for resolution of viraemia remain poorly understood. HCV specific humoral and cellular immune responses in patients with and without viraemia were investigated. METHODS In vitro T helper (TH) lymphocyte responses to structural and non-structu...
متن کاملCombating Hepatitis C (HCV): A Review of Present & Future Perspectives
Abstract: Over the past few decades, the race against the treatment strategies of infectious HCV has gained a lot of momentum. These treatments include several therapies like Ribavirin, INF-α, DAA based pro-drugs, vaccines, and even naturally occurring compounds like herbal extracts as well as scorpion venom. All of these drugs have their specialized techniques and methodologies of administrati...
متن کاملStudy on the Presence of HCV RNA in PBMC as Compared with Plasma of Hepatitis C Patients after Treatment
Background and Aims: Hepatitis C virus is one of the viral infections which is mainly transmitted by blood transfusion. Patients with thalassaemia frequently need blood transfusion and are in danger of HCV infection. In most cases of infection (85%) the virus evades the immune system and establishes a chronic infection that may lead to cirrhosis and liver carcinoma. Liver is the main site of HC...
متن کاملComparison of a newly developed automated and quantitative hepatitis C virus (HCV) core antigen test with the HCV RNA assay for clinical usefulness in confirming anti-HCV results.
Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is a global health care problem. Diagnosis of HCV infection is mainly based on the detection of anti-HCV antibodies as a screening test with serum samples. Recombinant immunoblot assays are used as supplemental tests and for the final detection and quantification of HCV RNA in confirmatory tests. In this study, we aimed to compare the HCV core antigen test with the HCV R...
متن کاملA Case of Hairy Cell Leukemia Associated with Hepatitis B Surface (HBs) Antigenemia and Concurrent Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) Seropositivity
Literature review shows that hepatitis C infection may increase the risk of non-hodgkin lymphoma. Reactivation of hepatitis B infection has been reported in patients with hairy cell leukemia after chemotherapy and/or splenectomy. We present hepatitis B surface (HBs) antigenemia and concurrent hepatitis C virus (HCV) seropositivity in a case of hairy cell leukemia. Key Words: Hairy cell leukemi...
متن کاملImmune Thrombocytopenia Associated with Hepatitis A Infection in Children
Hepatitis A infection is usually a self–limited disease during childhood. Autoimmune manifestations are rarely reported among patients with HA infection. We describe a previously healthy 6-yr-old male with acute hepatitis A who developed immune thrombocytopenia.
